Obituary for Robert Thomas Scanlon

Robert Thomas Scanlon (Bob), a resident of Macatawa for 40 years, was given the Gift of life, and now he has had to give it back to his Heavenly Father, who created him. He took his mortal leave of this wondrous, miraculous world- this sun, that moon, good friends, a walk on the beach, a stroll through an ancient city, the memory of a loved one’s hand in his- on August 12, 2014. He passed away from a lingering illness with his loving wife, Mary Lee, by his side. He was 72.

In addition to his Wife, Bob is survived by his Children-daughter Sue (Dave) Kayner, son John (Kristen) Scanlon, daughter Lisa Scanlon; his grandchildren- Breanna Ratering, Katie Scanlon and Jack Scanlon. He is also survived by his Father-in-law, Brother-in-law, 2 Sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews and all the people who gave him joy throughout his life.

He spent his life’s work in the insurance industry for 40 years, the last 30 of which he owned the Scanlon Insurance Agency. He earned many industry honors for his work. He retired at age 57, and he and Mary moved to Southwest Florida for winters and continued to enjoy Macatawa in the summers.

He was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

He was an avid investor, and CNBC was the background music that played every day in our home. He was a passionate reader, absorbing 3 newspapers cover-to-cover every day, and loved books, especially about antiquity, World War II or mysteries. Hardly anyone could beat him at poker, and his friends would get to the table early to take his seat and hope his luck would rub off on them. And he adored and was knowledgeable about cars- every make, model and year. Mary and Bob loved to travel and were fortunate to visit many destinations in many countries before he became ill.

He was loved well and truly, and will be missed forever.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on September 19, 2014 promptly at 4PM in the lower level of the Piper Restaurant, 2225 S Shore Dr, Macatawa, MI 49434.

The family is grateful to Hope Hospice of Bonita Springs, FL for their assistance, and eternally grateful to his loving Caregivers: Joe, Marie, Nadia and Santos.

Memorials may be made to the charity of your choosing.

“Goodnight, Sweet Prince, and Flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest.”
